OUR HISTORY

Our Journey: From Farmer Training to Climate Innovation

We began with a simple mission — to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools for regenerative agriculture, empowering them to restore their soils, boost yields, and protect the planet. But as we worked side by side with Ghana’s farmers, we uncovered a bigger challenge: while the knowledge was there, the market lacked a truly sustainable, high-quality soil restoration solution that could deliver lasting impact at scale.

Instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem, we built the solution ourselves.

Our team pioneered Ghana’s first biochar made entirely from rice husks — a zero-waste, high-carbon product that enriches the soil, retains water, and locks away carbon for centuries. From designing and engineering our own pyrolyzer to perfecting the production process, we became masters of every step — ensuring unmatched quality, sustainability, and traceability.

Scaling for Greater Impact

From our early beginnings with a single, custom-built pyrolyzer, GreenHeart SE has grown into a pioneering climate-tech enterprise with the capacity to transform thousands of tons of agricultural waste into valuable products every year.

Today, we operate Ghana’s first carbon removal project focused on waste from smallholder farmers, capturing over 2,800 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually through our biochar production. Our current facility processes 1,500 tons of rice husks per year, producing high-quality biochar for soil regeneration, crop improvement and protection solutions for natural crop protection, and other circular economy products.

With expansion plans underway, we aim to triple our processing capacity within the next three years, targeting over 6,000 tons of biochar produced annually and 10,000+ tons of CO₂ equivalent removed from the atmosphere.

By doing so, we’ll strengthen our ability to serve thousands of smallholder farmers, improve national food security, and contribute significantly to Ghana’s climate resilience and circular economy goals.

Sustainability

Agriculture That Restores the Planet and Revitalizes Communities

At GreenHeart SE, sustainability isn’t just a principle — it’s the foundation of every decision we make.

We are transforming Africa’s agricultural waste challenge into a climate solution, merging environmental stewardship with economic opportunity. Our vision is simple yet powerful: a future where farming regenerates the land, empowers rural livelihoods, and strengthens climate resilience.

Empowering Farmers While Protecting the Environment

We believe that agriculture can drive prosperity without degrading the ecosystems it depends on. That’s why our model focuses on:

  • Increasing yields without land grabs or forcing monoculture farming.
  • Encouraging diversified, climate-smart farming practices that safeguard biodiversity.
  • Providing smallholder farmers with the tools, training, and market access they need to turn waste into value while reducing environmental risks like crop burning and soil depletion.

It’s proof that the right kind of agriculture can simultaneously feed people, restore soils, and protect the climate.

Reducing Waste, Increasing Incomes

Post-harvest waste is one of the biggest barriers to farmer income and food security. GreenHeart tackles this by:

  • Purchasing and processing agricultural residues directly from farmers, ensuring they earn from materials that would otherwise be discarded.
  • Introducing innovative processing and storage solutions that reduce spoilage and improve quality.
  • Creating new markets for waste streams, so farmers generate revenue beyond their core harvest.

Less waste means more income, better resource use, and stronger rural economies.

Turning Agricultural Waste Into Climate Opportunity

Using proprietary biochar technology developed in Ghana, we convert rice husks and other crop residues into high-quality biochar – a climate-positive product that:

  • Improves water retention and nutrient availability in soil.
  • Permanently locks carbon away for hundreds of years, helping to reverse climate change.
  • Eliminates open-field burning, improving air quality and reducing fire risks.

Our biochar production is 100% powered by the waste it processes, making it self-sufficient and low-carbon from start to finish.

Meeting Africa’s Food and Climate Goals Responsibly

Africa’s population is expected to double by 2050, driving a surge in food demand. Meeting this challenge sustainably means:

  • Scaling agricultural productivity without large-scale deforestation or harmful monocultures.
  • Building decentralized processing hubs close to farmers to reduce transport emissions and boost local value addition.
  • Leveraging Africa’s abundant agricultural residues to produce biochar and carbon credits that finance further sustainability initiatives.

This isn’t just farming – it’s climate-smart industrialization rooted in rural communities.
